What is your Communication Style?

I am a Toastmaster, which means I am part of one of the clubs affiliated to Toastmasters international. As a Toastmaster, I work on improving my communication skills through various projects. In my last project, I learned about identifying the communication style that I believe might you use to you all too.

People around us communicate in different ways. You might have noticed a few of them are reserved, while a few are friendly and supportive. Toastmasters classifies communication styles into four types –

Needless to say, each one of us possesses a mix of all these communication traits. But most of us are particularly inclined towards a particular style of communication.

Direct communicators are people who tell you what they feel and they would much appreciate it if you did the same. Such communicators are result oriented and more focused on getting the work done. And while such a communication style might help to move things along at a faster pace, such communicators might be perceived as rude or patient.

Initiating communicators are enthusiastic and full of ideas. They like to do things differently and they are creative. Such communicators seek more praise and approval than others. Appreciation helps them keep motivated.

Supportive communicators are calm and super friendly. They are easy to talk to because they patiently listen to others. They are good with personal relationships and are highly likable.

Analytical communicators, as the name, suggest thinking before they act. They think of all the possibilities and make an informed decision. They are calm, quiet, and love to keep things private. They will rarely give an opinion unless asked.

After reading the four types of communicators, I am sure you might have easily identified your communication style. Try to be flexible and change your communication style as needed. That said, try to identify the communication styles used by the people around you. It will help have more meaningful and better communication with them. Trust me a lot of problems are resolved once you accept and understand that everyone has a different style of communication.
