Pressed for time, I had only a weekend to explore the two great cities of Wisconsin : Milwaukee ( the largest city in Wisconsin) and Madison ( the Capitol of Wisconsin). I could manage only a day in each of these cities. Here’s what I did:

Day 1: Milwaukee

Stop 1: Harley Davidson Museum

Entry fee: $20 ( Ample parking)

Milwaukee is the home to the famous Harley Davidson bikes. A visit to the museum will bring you in touch with the rich history of Harley Davidson bikes. There are lots of bikes on display and there is a story behind each of them. It’s fun and amazing to learn about the beginning, the failures and the success of the Harley Davidson bikes.

There is a gallery on the ground floor, where you can sit on the bikes and get your pictures clicked. And there is a slot machine at the ticket counter, where for 25¢ you can get Harley Davidson sovereigns.

Stop 2 : Milwaukee Public Market

Entry fee: None (Need to pay for parking)

It’s a market, where you can eat delicious food. You will find lots of things to eat here: sea food, baked goods, smoothies, ice creams, middle eastern food etc. It’s heavily crowded with not much space to walk. The food is awesome though.

We tried some seafood at the famous ‘St. Paul Fish Company’ , alongwith icecreams, smoothies and pastries.

Stop 3: The Hop

Ticket : None

We rode the ‘The Hop‘, which is a modern street car. You can catch it from next to the ‘Public Market’. It’s ticketless for the first year.

After this we left for Madison. It’s an hour’s drive from Milwaukee. Read on to learn what we did on Day 2.

Day 2 : Madison

Stop 1: The Capitol

Entry fee: None

The Capitol is a beauty. It’s situated in the centre and looks beautiful. It is the house of the legislature and the Supreme Court. Free guided tours are conducted at specific times everyday. Make sure to schedule your visit accordingly. The tours are really knowledgeable and should not be missed. The capitol has a rich history. There is a observatory at the top too.

Stop 2: University of Wisconsin, Madison

This capital city houses one of the top universities in the country, and a visit to its campus must not be missed. The campus is huge, widely spread over a large area of the city.

Stop 3: University of Wisconsin, Madison Arboretum

Entry fee: None

Spread over a huge area, the university conducts its research and teaching here. It’s filled with a lot of diverse natural plantations. If you have time, you can visit the nearby Henry Vilas zoo, also free of charge.

Stop 4 : The Old Fashioned restaurant

Just outside the ‘The Capitol’, you will find lots of beautiful restaurants but ‘The Old Fashioned’ came highly recommended. It provides a choice of amazing sandwiches amongst other things – a must try when in Madison. Also do not forget ‘Cheese Curds’, a Wisconsin specialty.

Most of the visitor places in Milwaukee and Madison are free of charge. Both cities are a beauty in themselves and it’s an amazing experience just walking down their streets.
